A 59-year-old man was killed after an excavator rolled on top of them on a residential Northern Westchester road, police said.
The incident happened on Friday, Oct. 27 around 2:15 p.m., when the Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department responded to an excavator rollover on Baptist Church Road.
According to Yorktown Police, a 59-year-old man who had been working with a local tree company had become trapped underneath an excavator he was standing next to. The man was confirmed to have died shortly after authorities arrived.
Fire crews then stabilized the machine and performed a heavy-lifting operation while Yorktown Police, Westchester County Police, Occupational Health and Safety Administration investigators, and the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office looked into the incident.
The scene was later cleared around 6 p.m.
More information about the incident, including the victim's name, has not yet been released pending notification of his family. Foul play is not currently suspected, police said.
The incident is now under investigation by the Yorktown Police Detective Division, the Westchester County Department of Public Safety's Forensic Investigation Unit, and OSHA.
